The Poor

The poor are many
and so—
impossible to forget.

No doubt,
as day breaks,
they see the buildings
where they wish
they could live with their children.

They
can steady the coffin
of a constellation on their shoulders.
They can wreck
the air like furious birds,
blocking out the sun.

But not knowing these gifts,
they enter and exit through mirrors of blood,
walking and dying slowly.

And so,
one cannot forget them.

This poem is about the poor and those who suffer because of it. This poem is basically stating the desires that poor people have and how most end up dying and live miserable lives but are impossible to forget. I feel like the speaker is very sympathetic and realizes their struggles. The speaker also makes it seem like you can not forget about these people who hurt and go through very tough times. The part where it says "they enter and exit through mirrors of blood" show the darkness they experience. The poem is trying to tell the reader that these people go through the same situations over and over again with the same painful sufferings. "They see the buildings where they wish they could live with their children" the poem states in the second stanza. The poem is trying to help the reader feel sympathy for these poor people because these people wish to be in a better environment for themselves and families but they can't. The tone is very down beat and pitiful. This poem's tone makes someone think and feel bad for the people being discussed in this poem. The tone also sets the mood across and definitely makes the reader want to be sad over this. The theme is that even though poor people aren't that recognized and they suffer a lot they will never be forgotten.

  1. I agree with your thoughts on the theme completely. I also agree with your tone and how it sets the mood across and makes the reader feel sad, but I also feel like part of why he wrote this to acknowledge what the people struggled through and have other people acknowledge it as well.

  2. I agree with your theme. I think that it's hard for the poor to be forgotten because there are so any signs that they are there and there are so many. The tone definitely provides a different view on this situation because so any people forget how many others are homeless or poor.

  3. i agree with the theme a Tifany thought of, but in addition I feel that the poem is saying that you should not only recognize the poor but also once you recognize them you should have the goodness in your heart to help them any way that you can. If your recognizing them then your seeing how much they need help. I believe that a lot of poor people feel alone in the world and lie they have no way out but when they have support and help they then finally see that they still have a chance. The tone of the poem in my opinion is both sad but encouraging. It may be so sad that it encourages others to help the poor and needy. Then again it also might be so sad that it tells the poor that they are not alone and there is others out there just lie them.

  4. The theme statement, yes, very nice, I agree. I love that the fact that no one will be forgotten resonates throughout all aspects of this poem. I like that you included pitiful in your tone because it really does make you want to help these people in need. As for the tone also being sad, I don't see how anyone could argue this considering that it talks about people dying, and the overall just not great lives many people in our world have. I also like the quote "they enter and exit through mirrors of blood" as it shows that not much at all changes and these people suffer constantly.

  5. I agree with the theme of your poem. I agree with the feeling of the poem, that poor people should never be forgotten and should get the help they need, the imagery helps me understand the poem a lot.
